... the last of the Bramin Madeiras were bought by a well-known temperance ex-governor of Vermont for "medical purposes"... I had a great-aunt who would not touch a drop of liquor, but regularly drank a glass of Malmsey at 11 am with a biscuit and another at 4 pm with cake... When I was in New York I saw a well-known wine merchant bottling of one-eighth bottles of Madeira with "tear-off tops"... for chemists to sell to non-drinking old ladies to carry in their handbags.
It is curious how teetotallers do not seem to consider enjoying the medicinal properties of Madeira to be against their principles.
